As 2024 comes to an end, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is stepping into 2025 with more confidence through improved quality of research and community engagement.
On December 12, 2024, the Directorate of Research and Strategic Cooperation at UIII held its annual Research and Community Engagement Seminar, highlighting the important role of external evaluation in improving results, refining methods, and increasing social impact.
The seminar brought together grant recipients, external reviewers, and academic leaders in an engaging space for sharing knowledge. Throughout 2024, UIII provided research grants to twelve projects across ‘flagship’, ‘collaborative’, and ‘faculty-based’ categories, along with six community engagement projects.
To ensure focused discussions and relevant themes, these projects were grouped according to UIII's four faculties, namely Faculty of Islamic Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Economics and Business and Faculty of Education.
Four experienced external assessors were invited to review and provide feedback on the research and community projects. They were Dr. Femmy Roeslan from Universitas Indonesia, Prof. Siti Nurul Azkiyah and Prof. Ali Munhanif from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, and Dr. Ahmad Rafiq from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta. Their input not only strengthened the quality of the projects but also encouraged creative solutions for addressing social challenges.
One notable research project presented during the seminar was the one led by Dr. Destina Wahyu Winarti from the Faculty of Education. Her study explored the use of ‘Massive Open Online Courses’ (MOOCs), such as Udemy, in teaching Wasatiyyah Islam (Moderate Islam). Using a mixed-method approach, the study included pre- and post-tests from thirty participants and reflections from twelve others. The results showed a clear improvement in participants' understanding of moderate Islamic principles through online learning.
Looking ahead to 2025, UIII is committed to strengthening research and community engagement through ongoing partnerships with external experts. This approach reflects UIII's dedication to maintaining high academic standards and creating meaningful social change.
With a focus on collaboration, improvement, and the guidance of external reviewers, UIII is ready to face 2025 with confidence—aiming to deliver impactful research and positive contributions to society.
