Exploring the Future, UIII Hosts Experts to Discuss Biotechnology, Bioinformatics and Data Science

DEPOK - This week the Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) became a hub of scientific discourse, as it welcomed three distinguished experts to explore the transformative potential of Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, and Data Science. This engaging event, held on August 5th, 2024, provided a platform for in-depth discussions on how these cutting-edge fields are shaping our world.

The event unfolded in two insightful sessions. The first session examined the world of biotechnology, with illuminating presentations by Dr. Isom Hilmi and Dr. Lalu Muhammad Irham. Dr. Hilmi, a physicist with a PhD from Leipzig University, Germany, and a current researcher at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, shared his expertise in this burgeoning field.

“Biotechnology is a fascinating, interdisciplinary discipline that merges biology, computing, and statistics,” Dr. Hilmi remarked, highlighting the innovative fusion at the heart of biotechnology. Following him, Dr. Irham, who holds a PhD in Pharmacy from Taipei Medical University, Taiwan, and serves as an academic at Ahmad Dahlan University, Yogyakarta, shed light on the crucial role of bioinformatics.

“Bioinformatics, particularly genomics—the study of genes—holds immense importance today. Genomic medicine, which translates genomic research into clinical practice, and the development of new drug compounds are just a few of its groundbreaking applications,” Dr. Irham explained, emphasizing the field's societal impact.

The second session shifted focus to the realm of Data Science, led by Dr. Taufik Susanto, a renowned expert in mathematics and data science from UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. With a PhD in Data Science from the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, Dr. Susanto brought a wealth of knowledge to the discussion. “Data Science employs scientific methods, processes, algorithms, and systems to extract profound insights from both structured and unstructured data. Much of this data originates from Big Data systems,” Dr. Susanto explained, illustrating the field's vast potential to unlock new knowledge.

Throughout the event, discussions also revolved around aligning these advanced study programs with UIII's core values and its overarching vision and mission.
