By R. Alpha Amirrachman, Ph.D.,

Yogyakarta, April 29, 2026 — Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability by participating in the UI GreenMetric Workshop for Islamic Higher Education Institutions 2026, held on April 29–30, 2026, at UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta.

The workshop brought together leaders of Islamic universities (PTKIN) across Indonesia to strengthen the integration of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into higher education systems. The event, themed “Integrating UI GreenMetric in Realizing an Ecotheology-Based Green Campus,” emphasized the need for systemic approaches in embedding sustainability within university governance, education, and operations.

The program opened today, April 29, with remarks from the Rector of UIN Sunan Kalijaga and the Head of UI GreenMetric, followed by sessions on sustainable campus management, infrastructure, energy, waste, water, transportation, and sustainability-oriented education.

In his opening remarks, Rector Prof. Noorhaidi stressed that sustainability must go beyond symbolic commitments and be embedded within institutional systems. He highlighted the importance of integrating ecological values into higher education through an ecotheological perspective that connects religious principles with environmental responsibility.

UI GreenMetric Chair Dr. Vishnu Juwono echoed this view, emphasizing that sustainability will be defined by systems rather than slogans. He underlined the importance of measurable performance, credible data, and integrated institutional ecosystems to ensure real impact.

UIII was represented by Vice Rector Syafiq Hasyim and Head of the Quality Assurance Center, R. Alpha Amirrachman. Their participation reflects UIII’s strategic direction to embed sustainability across its academic, research, and governance frameworks.

Syafiq Hasyim noted that UIII approaches sustainability as a holistic transformation linking education, governance, and global engagement. He emphasized that universities must function as platforms connecting knowledge production with policy and societal impact.

Meanwhile, R. Alpha Amirrachman highlighted the critical role of quality assurance in translating sustainability commitments into measurable outcomes. He stressed the need for coherent institutional systems that integrate academic programs, research initiatives, and community engagement in alignment with the SDGs.

A key highlight of the opening day was the signing of a joint SDGs commitment charter. During the ceremony, representatives of participating universities came forward to formalize their commitments. Representing UIII, R. Alpha Amirrachman stepped forward to sign the charter alongside other PTKIN leaders, symbolizing collective accountability.

The charter outlines commitments to inclusive education, sustainable infrastructure, environmental stewardship, and climate action, reflecting a shared effort to advance coordinated sustainability practices.

UIII’s participation aligns with its broader institutional direction as a globally oriented postgraduate university integrating sustainability into education, research, and policy engagement .

The workshop continues until April 30, with further sessions aimed at strengthening collaboration and practical implementation strategies. Participants agreed that sustainability in higher education will ultimately depend not on commitments alone, but on the ability of institutions to build systems that deliver measurable impact.
