Diving into Islamic Finance at DIFSS 2023: UIII Student’s Journey into a Global Stage

UIII, DURHAM - The year 2023 was one etched in my memory forever, marked by a pivotal moment that reignited my passion for Islamic finance: attending the Durham Islamic Finance Summer School (DIFSS). It wasn't just about the prestigious program or the chance to mingle with renowned names in the field; it was about witnessing firsthand the vibrant pulse of Islamic finance on a global stage.

Joining hands with two amazing colleagues, Citra Widuri and Wafdah Layli Rizqiyah, we navigated a rigorous application process fuelled by a shared curiosity about the potential of Sharia-compliant finance to shape a more just and equitable world. It was an honor to be joining this prestigious program, and that feeling only intensified as we stepped onto the historic grounds of Durham University.

DIFSS 2023 proved to be an intellectual feast. Leading figures like Prof. Mehmet Asutay, Prof. Habib Ahmed, Mahmoud Mohieldin, Dalal Assaaolui, Farrukh Habib, and others shared their invaluable insights, painting a dynamic picture of Islamic finance's trajectory across diverse regions and fields. From mastering intricate Sharia-compliant contracts to exploring the cutting edge of Islamic fintech and venture capital, every session felt like unlocking a hidden chamber of knowledge.

But DIFSS wasn't just about textbooks and lectures. It was about connecting with a global community of like-minded individuals. Imagine lively debates over coffee, late-night discussions about inclusive economies, and the thrill of discovering shared dreams with people from France to Indonesia. This wasn't just a classroom; it was a global marketplace of ideas!

Leaving DIFSS, I wasn't just brimming with knowledge; I was buzzing with purpose. My suitcase wasn't just filled with souvenirs but also a treasure trove of connections and insights ready to be shared. Participating in DIFSS wasn't just about fulfilling my personal dream; it was about taking a giant leap toward contributing to a brighter future. Returning home, I feel equipped with not just knowledge but a renewed sense of purpose. The experiences, connections, and insights gained at DIFSS are a treasure trove I intend to share and leverage to make a tangible impact.
