It was drizzling outside Jacob Koffie Huis, a café located nearby UIII Campus in Depok, West Java. The soft patter of raindrops against the café windows created a cozy backdrop as students and staff from UIII gathered for their annual Christmas dinner. Inside, the warm glow of lights and the hum of conversation filled the air, wrapping everyone in a sense of comfort and belonging.
This tradition began in 2022 with a small group of Christian and Catholic students seeking a slice of home during the festive season. Over time, it grew into something bigger—an evening where students and staff, regardless of their background, came together to share a meal and stories.
Among the attendees were also Muslim students and staff who joined not only out of friendship but to show solidarity and support for their peers.
The night began with a spread of dishes. As everyone tucked into the hearty meal, the café buzzed with laughter. Once the plates were cleared and warm drinks were in hand, the storytelling began. One by one, students shared how Christmas was celebrated in their home countries.
Erickson Samson spoke about a tradition leading to Christmas in his home country the Philippines, while Nanda Silatsa Serge described how he celebrated Christmas in Cameroon. The stories carried everyone across borders, weaving together traditions from far and wide.
For many, being far from home during the holidays can feel lonely, but nights like this make it easier. The presence of Muslim friends added an extra layer of warmth, reminding everyone that the spirit of the season transcends faith and culture.
As the rain continued to fall outside and the evening drew to a close, the café was still filled with laughter and lingering conversations. The UIII Christmas Dinner is not just about celebrating a holiday; it is about building a space where everyone feels welcome. And as the students and staff said their goodbyes, one promise echoed among them—to return next year, share another meal, and keep this heartfelt tradition alive.
