UIII.AC.ID, DEPOK - As we bid farewell to 2023, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is proud to share the inspiring New Year resolutions of some of its students. As a newly established university focusing on developing innovative research and solutions for global issues, the students reflect on the university’s missions.

“I am staying in my room and writing my thesis for the best result I can get,” laughingly said Sadia Abbasi, an Afghani Master’s student who is currently in her final year of study, saying that she aspired for her research to make impacts on societies.

In quite different narratives, Zainab Manzoor from Pakistan said that her New Year resolution is to be more empathetic, reflecting on personal development to be a better individual who can do something for the people around them.

“This year, I want to become more empathic, kind, happier, and courageous. I will try to socialize more and also try my best to overcome my anxiety,” she expressed.

Meanwhile, Sonya, an Indonesian student, explained her resolution in one word, “Be a better student!” which is somehow distinctive from Akbar, another student of the Faculty of Social Sciences (FoSS), who wants to focus on helping his faculty boost its social media engagement.

“Simply [to create] more awesome [media] content for FOSS [Faculty of Social Science], so you can share with your family and the world about our activities on this campus,” said Akbar, who is part of UIII’s media innovation team.

For foreign students like Yahya Abubakar, exploring more about Indonesia is one great option, while admitting that focusing more on improving academic writing skills remains the priority.

“To explore more about Indonesian islands, foods, and cultures, [to] stay healthier and exercise more, add some weight, and lastly not to miss any of the five obligatory prayers in its due time and in the congregation,” Yahya from Nigeria said.

In the meantime, Izzul Fatchu Reza, a Ph.D. scholar of UIII, said, “A more prosperous hope and peace, the war ending in Palestine and Ukraine, and I hope my scores for the courses are good.”

Indeed, in this chaotic world where innocents are being killed, a combined prayer is needed. As the year 2023 comes to an end, may the stories of these students serve as a beacon of hope for 2024. UIII is not just a place of academic pursuit but a community fostering growth, resilience, and positive change.
