Minister of Religious Affairs to Deliver Keynote Lecture on Faith and Environment at UIII

Depok, Indonesia — On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) will host a landmark lecture by Indonesia’s Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Dr. K.H. Nasaruddin Umar, MA, titled "Faith and Environment: Pragmatism, Piety, and Ethics." The event, hosted by the Center of Islam and Global Challenges (IGC), Faculty of Islamic Studies UIII and to be held on the UIII campus, promises to be an insightful exploration of the interplay between spiritual values and environmental ethics.

Prof. Dr. Nasaruddin Umar’s credentials make him uniquely qualified to speak on this critical topic. Currently serving as the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, and the Chairman of its Governing Board, he has been a leading voice in bridging religious teachings with contemporary societal challenges. His extensive academic and professional background spans multiple leadership roles, including as a professor of Quranic studies at the Faculty of Ushuluddin UIN Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, and rector of PTIQ University Jakarta.

In addition to his academic achievements, Prof. Nasaruddin has held prestigious government positions, such as Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs (2012–2014) and, previously, Director General of Islamic Community Guidance (2006–2012). He also actively contributes to global discourse, having served as a visiting scholar and professor at institutions like Georgetown University, SOAS University of London, and Sophia University in Tokyo.

Joining the Minister as speakers at the event are Prof. Anna Gade, Fellow at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UIII; Prof. Iim Halimatusa'diyah, professor of political science and Research Director of PPIM UIN Jakarta; Prof. Michiel Schaeffer, adjunct professor and lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences, UIII; Aria Nakissa, PhD, Lecturer at the Faculty of Islamic Studies, UIII. The discussion will be moderated by Wietske Merison, Fellow at the Center of Islam and Global Challenges (IGC), Faculty of Islamic Studies, UIII.

The lecture will emphasize the intersection of faith-based ethics and environmental pragmatism, offering insights into how religious teachings can inspire sustainable practices and stewardship of the earth. The distinguished panel of speakers will enrich the conversation, drawing on their expertise in Islamic studies, environmental ethics, and social sciences.
