UIII Gears Up for Inaugural Official Visit of the Minister of Religious Affairs

Depok, December 10, 2024 – Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is gearing up to host the newly appointed Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Dr. K.H. Nasaruddin Umar, MA, on his first official visit to the university on Wednesday, 11 December 2024. This highly anticipated event is expected to strengthen UIII’s ties with the Ministry and highlight the university’s role in advancing Islamic higher education in Indonesia and beyond.

Prof. Nasaruddin, who was inaugurated as Minister of Religious Affairs by President Prabowo Subianto on 21 October 2024, is a prominent scholar and public figure. He has served as the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque Jakarta since 2016 and holds various prestigious positions, including Rector of PTIQ University Jakarta and Professor of Islamic Studies at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta. 

As the Minister of Religious Affairs, Prof. Nasaruddin automatically becomes the member of the UIII Board of Trustees, as stipulated in the University’s Statutes, along with the Minister of Higher Education, Research, and Technology, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Foreign Affairs. 

The visit will begin with an official welcome ceremony led by UIII Rector Prof. Jamhari and other university leaders. During his time at UIII, Prof. Nasaruddin is scheduled to deliver a keynote address to faculty, staff, and students hosted by the Center of Islam and Global Challenges (IGC), Faculty of Islamic Studies (FIS). According to Prof. Yanwar Pribadi, the Dean of FIS, the Minister will outline his perspective on Islam and environmentalism in Indonesia and discuss ways to integrate religious values with modern academic approaches, centered around the theme “Faith and Environment: Pragmatism, Piety and Ethics”. 

The Minister will also tour UIII’s cutting-edge facilities, including the university’s renowned library, rectorate building, Rahmatal Lil ‘Alamin Mosque and the Faculty buildings. This tour will showcase UIII’s unique blend of tradition and innovation, aligning with Prof. Nasaruddin’s long-standing commitment to bridging classical Islamic scholarship with modern education. 

“This visit is expected to explore potential collaborations between UIII and the Ministry of Religious Affairs, with a focus on enhancing Indonesia’s position as a center for Islamic education and fostering partnerships with international institutions” said Dr. Chaider Bamualim, UIII University Secretary.  

This milestone visit will not only mark the Minister’s first engagement with UIII but also set the plans and strategies for future collaborations aimed at advancing Indonesia’s influences and leadership at global stage particularly in the Muslim world.
