Prof. Anna M. Gade to Join UIII as a Visiting Professor in September 2024

Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is excited to announce that Professor Anna M. Gade will be joining the Faculty of Social Sciences (FOSS) as a visiting professor starting September 2024. 

Prof. Anna M. Gade is a Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor in the Gaylord Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. She published a book titled "Muslim Environmentalisms: Religious and Social Foundations," published by Columbia University Press in 2019.

Prof. Gade’s work offers a comprehensive exploration of Islamic perspectives on environmentalism, blending textual analysis with ethnographic research. Her book delves into the religious and cultural underpinnings of Islamic environmentalism, demonstrating how these foundations shape ethical, legal, justice, and empirical principles.

By incorporating Islamic perspectives, Prof. Gade challenges and enriches conventional understandings of environmentalism and the environmental humanities. Her book features case studies in disaster management, educational programs, international development, conservation projects, religious rituals, and Islamic law. These case studies demonstrate the relevance of Islamic traditions in addressing contemporary ecological challenges.  

With Prof. Gade’s presence at UIII as a visiting professor, her expertise and interdisciplinary approach to environmental studies are expected to enrich the academic community and contribute significantly to ongoing discussions on climate change and environmental sustainability.

Since 2023, UIII has offered a Master of Public Policy Program Specializing in Climate Change at the Faculty of Social Sciences aimed at training future leaders in policymaking, policy analysis, and research on climate change issues.
