DEPOK – The Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) received specific commendation for its Green Campus implementation during the recent monitoring visit by the Inspectorate General of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. Inspectors Mr. Usup Rahman Hakim, Mr. Hilman Panji, and Mr. Eko Sulistiyanto, key members of the audit team, highlighted the university’s tangible commitment to sustainability and ecotheology mainstreaming among State Islamic universities in Indonesia while recommending a strategic step to gain global recognition: registering for the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking.

During a review of campus facilities and environmental management on Thursday, 11 December 2025, the inspectors noted the deliberate integration of green design, preserved natural landscapes, and sustainable practices across the UIII grounds. They connected these efforts directly to the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ broader vision on ecotheology.

“UIII’s development as a green and environmentally conscious campus is evident and highly commendable. It is a direct embodiment of the Ministry’s Ecotheology concept, translating ethical teachings into practical environmental stewardship,” stated Mr. Usup Rahman Hakim.

His colleague, Mr. Eko, affirmed the observation and offered a forward-looking suggestion to solidify this achievement. “To strengthen and formally measure this commitment, we recommend that UIII registers and participates in the UI GreenMetric framework,” he said. “This platform will not only provide a standardized measurement of your green campus efforts but also position UIII alongside other globally recognized sustainable universities. It turns your qualitative achievements into quantifiable, benchmarked excellence.”

The UI GreenMetric is a worldwide ranking that assesses universities’ commitment and actions toward environmental sustainability and green infrastructure. Participation involves evaluation across six key areas: setting and infrastructure, energy and climate change, waste management, water usage, transportation, and education and research.

UIII’s leadership welcomed the insightful feedback. “We are grateful for the appreciation of our ongoing green initiatives. The recommendation to join the UI GreenMetric is invaluable,” said Dr Chaider Bamualim, UIII‘s University Secretary. “It provides a clear roadmap to systematically enhance our sustainability programs and gain international accreditation for our efforts. This aligns perfectly with our vision to be a model modern Islamic university.”

The university’s green initiatives include extensive tree preservation, water conservation systems, the use of energy-efficient infrastructure, and a campus design that promotes walkability and reduces carbon footprint.

This targeted feedback from the Inspectorate General’s team moves beyond general appreciation, offering a concrete pathway for UIII to elevate its Green Campus status from a recognized internal achievement to a globally benchmarked standard of sustainability. []
