Obituary: In Loving Memory of Prof. Dr. Bahtiar Effendy (1958 – 2019)

We, at Indonesian International Islamic University (IIIU), and the community at Islamic Higher Education Institutions in Indonesia, are mourning the sudden death of Prof. Dr. Bahtiar Effendy, a faculty member, and former Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN), Jakarta.

He was one of the initiators of IIIU.

Professor Effendy passed away on Thursday, November 21, 2019. Prof. Bahtiar Effendy left a remarkable contribution to UIN Jakarta, where he worked as both professor and scholar. He was a generous educator to students, colleagues, the university and the community. As prominent Muslim scholar and Muhammadiyah central board chairman, he was known for his inspiring lectures and thought-provoking discussions on Islam and the State, and the role of Islam in community-building in Indonesia.

He was a prolific scholar, has written numerous important books and articles on religion and politics. Prof. Bahtiar Effendy was deeply loved by everyone, and we will remember him for his compassion, enthusiasm and everlasting trust and supports to his colleague. We will keep Prof. Bahtiar and his family in our prayers, and hope that they find strength in this time of grief.
