A Call for Unity and Humanitarian Action in Gaza

In a significant meeting in Doha, two weeks ago, former Indonesian Vice President H.M. Jusuf Kalla urged Hamas to unite with Al Fatah and strengthen internal cohesion. Speaking to Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh on July 12th, 2024 Kalla emphasized, "Without unity of aspirations and institutions, resolving the Gaza problem will only become more complex."
Jusuf Kalla, who is also the Chairman of UIII's Board of Trustees, stressed the importance of a united front for the Palestinian cause and highlighted the international community's focus on Gaza. The Israeli blockade has severely hampered aid distribution, worsening the humanitarian crisis. "The world is watching Gaza, and it has triggered all parties to help residents directly affected by the Israel-Hamas war," Kalla said. He called for prioritizing medical treatment for the injured and protecting vulnerable groups.

Kalla, known as JK in Indonesia, made it clear that any effective humanitarian plan depends on the cessation of violence. "If violence can be stopped, then reconstruction and rehabilitation of Gaza can automatically be carried out," he added. He urged Haniyeh to approach these efforts from a humanitarian perspective, setting aside political and ideological differences.

A statement from Kalla's team revealed that Haniyeh praised Indonesia’s diplomatic stance and humanitarian contributions. "Ismail Haniyeh highly praised the diplomatic position and role of the Republic of Indonesia," the statement read. However, it did not detail Haniyeh's response to Kalla's call for unity with Fatah, another influential Palestinian faction.

The Doha meeting underscores the urgent need for unity and coordinated efforts to bring relief to Gaza and work towards lasting peace in the region.
