Belgrade, Serbia – The Palace of Serbia became a hub for global interfaith cooperation on November 12, 2024, as leaders, scholars, and faith representatives convened for the fifth bilateral dialogue between Serbia and Indonesia. Themed “Dialogue for Peace: Tolerance and Culture,” the event underscored the enduring importance of mutual understanding and cultural collaboration.
Amid the distinguished speakers was Professor Jamhari Makruf, Rector of Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII), who played a pivotal role in shaping the dialogue. Representing one of Indonesia’s leading institutions for Islamic scholarship, Prof. Jamhari delivered a powerful presentation that highlighted the critical role of education in fostering tolerance and bridging faith divides.
Education as the Bedrock of Tolerance
In his address, Prof. Jamhari emphasized that education is a cornerstone of interfaith dialogue. He noted that universities, as centers of knowledge and cultural exchange, have a unique responsibility to instill values of mutual respect and understanding.
“Interfaith dialogue must begin with education,” he remarked. “Institutions like UIII are dedicated to creating spaces where different perspectives are not only welcomed but celebrated, paving the way for a more tolerant and harmonious world.”
By equipping students with the tools to understand diverse cultures and religions, Prof. Jamhari explained, universities can prepare future leaders to engage constructively with global challenges.
UIII’s Role on the Global Stage
As the Rector of UIII, Prof. Jamhari showcased the university’s international outlook and commitment to fostering dialogue across faiths and cultures. He outlined how UIII, through its academic programs and partnerships, contributes to building bridges between nations and communities.
“UIII embodies Indonesia’s spirit of pluralism and its vision of becoming a global leader in interfaith cooperation,” he said. “This dialogue reflects our shared mission with Serbia to promote peace, culture, and mutual understanding.”
Building on a Unique Partnership
The Serbia-Indonesia interfaith dialogue, established in 2011, has grown into a vital platform for fostering global harmony. Prof. Jamhari highlighted the historical and cultural significance of this partnership, noting that it serves as a model for other nations seeking to bridge divides.
“Despite being worlds apart geographically, Serbia and Indonesia share a commitment to values that transcend borders—peace, tolerance, and cultural appreciation,” he remarked.
A Call for Action
Concluding his presentation, Prof. Jamhari called on academic institutions worldwide to take an active role in interfaith initiatives. He urged educators, policymakers, and community leaders to recognize the transformative power of education in addressing prejudice and promoting inclusivity.
As the dialogue progressed, it became clear that the contributions of UIII and its Rector were instrumental in framing the conversation. The event not only celebrated the collaboration between Serbia and Indonesia but also reinforced the essential role of education in achieving global peace.
In a world seeking pathways to harmony, the voice of UIII, as articulated by Prof. Jamhari, stands as a beacon of hope and progress.[]
