Yogyakarta, 23 October 2024 — A partnership between UIII and the Faculty of Forestry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta has been formalized with the signing of an agreement to establish a five-hectare Kebun Benih Semai or Seedling Seed Orchard (SSO) on UIII grounds in Depok, West Java.
A Seedling Seed Orchard (SSO) is a type of seed orchard established from seedlings produced through natural or controlled pollination of selected parent trees. This aims to support environmental sustainability and provide high-quality seedlings for reforestation and afforestation initiatives.
During the visit to UGM campus on October 21-23, 2024, four UIII officials took part in the agreement proceedings at UGM’s Faculty of Forestry. The delegation included Dr. Chaider S. Bamualim, MA, University Secretary; Drs. Syafrizal, MSi, Asset Utilization Manager; M. Nurhidayat, S.Pd.I, Head of the Technical Implementation Unit; and Dicky Prabowo Perkasa, S.E., General Services Officer.
The Faculty of Forestry at UGM will assist UIII in the technical and operational aspects of setting up the SSO. The project will span multiple phases, beginning with the planting of quality seedlings and establishing protocols for seedling cultivation, monitoring, and distribution. The partnership will also include knowledge exchange, with UGM providing advisory support on the technical and ecological aspects of managing seedling seed orchards.
UGM’s expertise in forestry and environmental management makes it an ideal partner in UIII’s SSO project, and the faculty’s involvement will ensure the quality and longevity of the orchard. This partnership is part of UIII's commitment to environmental responsibility and its efforts to foster sustainable land management practices.
