Charyna Ayu Rizkyanti: Empathy Is Not An Antidote but also Solution

April 05, 2022

UIII.AC.ID, DEPOK - “Empathy is about finding echoes of another person in yourself.” A quote from Mohsin Hamid, a Pakistani novelist. Charyna Ayu Rizkyanti Ph.D, a lecturer at Faculty of Education UIII, used that quote to explain the definition of empathy during the LunchTalk event on March 25, 2022.

“Empathy in A Digital World” is the theme chosen for the second LunchTalk. Lunchtalk is a monthly regular lecturer talk by the Faculty of Education UIII that will discuss the relevant issues about the current situation. This event will not only provide knowledge, but it will also allow UIII to showcase the quality of the lecturers in each faculty, as lecturers will be speakers at each event. At the previous Lunchtalk on February 23, 2022, Dr. Lukman Nul Hakim, one of the lecturers, was given the opportunity to speak about Group Decision Making.

Charyna has taught at several universities in Indonesia after completing her master's and doctoral degrees in Human Development Psychology at UKM Malaysia.  This semester she decides to become a lecturer at UIII. She has also published several journal articles on the topic of empathy, such as “Empathy and Bystander Role in Cyberbullying Mediated by Communication Pattern” (Jurnal Psikohumanika, 2021), “Cognitive Empathy and Phubbing among College Students (KONSELI: Jurnal Bimbingan dan Konseling, 2021), et cetera.

This event is also available to the public because the theme of empathy in the digital world is highly relevant for today's society, especially since the outbreak of the pandemic, we have tended to rely on digital technology to carry out our daily activities. “Empathy isn’t just an antidote, but the solution for every negative behavior.” This is the statement that Charyna said repeatedly in her presentation to show the audience the main point on this topic.

Many who participated in the event showed their enthusiasm through the question-and-answer session, including Fadla Tsania Agustia, one of the students from Faculty of Education UIII. Dani, one participant who is affiliated with UNESCO MGIEP (Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development) as a consultant for Prevention of Violent Extremism, also showed his appreciation for Charyna and UIII for conducting a webinar on the topic of empathy.

At the end of the event, Charyna Ayu Rizkyanti shares one of her big dreams with the audience. As a higher education institution, we hope that UIII [WU3]  can develop a program, module, or social media campaign focused on the topic of empathy in the future. (ad)
