Prof. Arya Gaduh Discusses Causal Inference in Education and Social Science at UIII’s EconInsight

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) held its regular EconInsight lecture on July 12th, 2024, featuring Associate Professor Arya Gaduh, who engaged the audience with an in-depth discussion on "Causal Inference in Education and Social Science."

Associate Professor Arya Gaduh is the Director of the Master of Science in Economic Analytics, at the Sam M. Walton College of Business, University of Arkansas, USA. His research focuses on empirical microeconomic topics related to human/social capital and urban economics in low-middle-income countries. 

Regarding the topic, causal inference is about figuring out the causal effect of something by making causal assumptions. In his lecture, Associate Prof. Gaduh illustrated causal inference through the concept of the Shaman (Dukun) function, explaining how shamanistic practices can offer experiences involving causal strategies between beliefs, desires, and magical thinking.

The session was moderated by a UIII lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Teguh Yudo Wicaksono, Ph.D., who emphasized the diverse strategies used in causal inference to draw conclusions from observational data. He highlighted the importance of this approach in helping academics express causal assumptions and conclusions in their research.
