Practicing Religion

Indonesia is constitutionally committed to religious freedom, and Greater Jakarta reflects this diversity in everyday life. As the most populous and diverse urban area in the country, it offers easy and respectful access to places of worship for followers of various faiths. This inclusive environment makes it possible for international students to continue their religious practices comfortably while also learning about Indonesia’s pluralistic society.

Muslim Facilities

As a Muslim-majority country, Indonesia ensures that masjids (mosques) and musallas (prayer rooms) are widely available—even inside universities, malls, offices, and public parks. In Depok and the UIII campus area, hearing the five daily adhan (call to prayer) is a part of daily rhythm. Prayer times are generally accommodated in class and meeting schedules.

Christian Churches

  • GPIB Immanuel Depok (Protestant)
  • GPIB Immanuel Depok (Catholic)

These churches are welcoming to local and international congregants alike, and often host
community events or services in both Bahasa Indonesia and English.

Orthodox Church

St. Vladimir Russian Orthodox Church, located in Bekasi, provides a place for Eastern Orthodox Christians to worship in a culturally familiar environment.

Buddhist and Hindu Temples.

  • Vihara Gayatri in Tapos (Buddhist)

  • Pura Tribhuana Agung (Balinese Hindu)

  • Mangala Vinayaka Ganesha Temple in Central Jakarta (Indian Hindu)

These temples serve both local communities and international devotees and often host
cultural events open to the public.

Confucian Temple

Klenteng Han Tan Kong, located in Cileungsi, is a historic and spiritual site that represents the
long-standing presence of Confucianism in Indonesia.

All these places are not only accessible for personal worship, but also provide enriching
cultural experiences, especially during religious festivals like Ramadan, Christmas, Nyepi, Vesak, or Imlek. Visiting them—whether for spiritual or academic interest—offers a deeper appreciation of Indonesia’s religious and cultural harmony.
