Depok, April 16, 2025 — Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is set to play a pivotal role in Indonesia’s eco-theological agenda as it prepares to host the national launch of the One Million Matoa Trees Movement on Earth Day, April 22, 2025. This environmental movement is a flagship program initiated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, aimed at promoting ecological consciousness through faith-based action.
The preparatory visit was led by Prof. Dr. Suyitno, M.Ag, Director General of Islamic Education at the Ministry of Religious Affairs, accompanied by Prof. Arskal Salim, PhD, and Dr. Drs. Ismail Cawidu, M.Si. They were warmly welcomed by UIII’s Rector, Prof. Jamhari, University Secretary Dr. Chaider S. Bamualim, and M. Nurhidayat, S.Pd.I.
The launch, to be led by President Prabowo Subianto, will feature a ceremonial planting of the first 10 matoa trees at UIII’s campus. The nationwide movement aims to plant one million matoa trees, integrating sustainability and spirituality into educational and religious institutions.
The tree-planting ceremony will be held near the UIII Rectorate Building, accompanied by a keynote speech and followed by a symbolic groundbreaking for the Istiqlal International Boarding School, making the day a dual celebration of ecological and educational milestones.
In the coordination meeting, UIII leadership confirmed their commitment to supporting the initiative by preparing the necessary land and infrastructure. “This is an opportunity for UIII to be at the heart of a national transformation, where faith meets sustainability,” said Rector Prof. Jamhari.
The Ministry also ensured that the event will adhere to strict protocol standards, with designated teams handling logistics, security, media, and guest management. A press conference is scheduled before the official luncheon, and selected media outlets will be given special access to cover the event.
The Matoa Movement reflects the Ministry’s broader eco-theological vision, positioning religion as a force for environmental stewardship. As part of this vision, the UIII campus will serve not just as an academic hub but as a living laboratory for sustainable practices grounded in Islamic values.
