DEPOK, West Java, 25 September 2026 — Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) has entered the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings for the first time, placing 121st in Indonesia and 1,131st globally in the 2026 edition. With a score of 5,235, the result marks an encouraging first benchmark for the relatively young university as it develops its sustainability agenda.

UIII Rector Prof. Jamhari Makruf congratulated R. Alpha Amirrachman, M.Phil., Ph.D., Head of the Center for Quality Assurance of UIII, and the team responsible for coordinating the university’s participation.

“Alhamdulillah, I would like to congratulate Dr. Alpha Amirrachman and the entire Center of Quality Assurance team, including Rahma UIII Octaviani as UIII’s UI GreenMetric PIC, for this outstanding result,” Prof. Jamhari said. “This ranking reflects the hard work, dedication, and strong teamwork of everyone involved. Hopefully it will motivate us to continue improving and achieve even better results next year. The national top 50 is just one sprint away.”

The Rector’s ambition points to the value of UIII’s first result: it establishes a baseline against which the university can measure future progress. UI GreenMetric assesses institutions across seven areas: setting and infrastructure; energy and climate change; waste; water; transportation; education and research; and governance and digitalization. The last of these was added to the framework in 2026, underscoring the role of institutional decisions alongside environmental measures.

On campus, UIII has adopted policies to protect green space as it develops its facilities. Its sustainability framework requires green open space to account for at least 60 percent of the campus area. The university also provides shuttle services and bicycles for movement around the campus. These measures form part of a wider approach to making daily campus operations more environmentally responsible.

UIII has also worked with its neighbours on environmental activities. In July 2026, university staff and local residents joined representatives of Baktijaya Village and Sukmajaya District in a cleanup and tree planting program along the Cijantung River and near the campus. Such activities connect the university’s green campus goals with the surrounding community.

UIII’s sustainability work extends into its academic mission. At the Faculty of Social Sciences, its Master in Public Policy focusing on Climate Change prepares students to analyse climate challenges and develop sustainable, equitable policy responses, particularly for the Global South. The faculty’s Climate Policy Lab supports this work through research intended to inform policy and practical responses to climate risks.

The university’s wider research agenda also addresses the relationship between climate change and development. The Centre for Climate and International Development, within UIII’s Indonesian Institute for Foreign Affairs, is being established as a hub for interdisciplinary research, education, and policy engagement. Its stated areas of focus include climate resilience, equitable development, and international cooperation.

UIII’s participation in the ranking follows an earlier recommendation from the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Inspectorate General that the university use UI GreenMetric to measure its green campus progress. UIII subsequently joined the 2026 UI GreenMetric workshop for Islamic higher education institutions in Yogyakarta. Its first ranking result now gives the university a clearer basis for identifying strengths, addressing gaps, and documenting improvement in the years ahead. ***
