Dr. Khaled Ghanem Al-Ghaith, the UAE’s seasoned diplomat, carries a quiet gravitas shaped by decades of navigating global complexities. From his early days at the UAE Embassy in Japan in 1992 to his tenure as Ambassador to Malaysia, Turkey, Brunei, and Azerbaijan, Ambassador Al-Ghaith has built a career fostering connections—whether through trade agreements or interfaith dialogues. Since November 2023, as Secretary-General of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity (HCHF), he has channeled this expertise into a singular mission: uniting humanity through shared values.

In Jakarta, at the upcoming International Conference on Human Fraternity hosted by Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) and HCHF on July 29–30, 2025, Ambassador Al-Ghaith will emerge as a pivotal figure, his presence a reminder that diplomacy can be a force for compassion as much as strategy.

Born in the UAE, Al-Ghaith’s journey reflects a world in constant dialogue. His roles as Assistant Foreign Minister for Economic Affairs (2009–2016) and negotiator at the World Trade Organization gave him a front-row seat to global challenges like inequality and cultural divides. Yet, it is his personal warmth—evident in his interactions with Indonesian scholars and leaders—that makes him relatable. “He listens with purpose,” said Prof. Jamhari, Rector of UIII, recalling Ambassador Al-Ghaith’s 2024 visit to the campus, where he laid the groundwork for enduring partnerships. This blend of experience and empathy set the stage for his leadership in Jakarta.

Human Fraternity in a Fractured World

The Document on Human Fraternity, signed in 2019 by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Ahmed El-Tayeb, is more than a text for Al-Ghaith—it is a blueprint for a better world. As HCHF’s Secretary-General, he has championed its principles of tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect through initiatives like ethical education programs in Armenia and interfaith projects in Malaysia. In Jakarta, his mission took center stage at the conference themed “Advancing Human Fraternity Amidst Global Uncertainties: Toward a More Peaceful and Prosperous World Civilization.”

Al-Ghaith’s keynote address framed human fraternity as a practical solution to global crises—migration, poverty, climate change, and social injustice. He highlighted the newly launched Indonesian Institute of Human Fraternity, a collaboration between UIII and HCHF, as a hub for dialogue and research in Southeast Asia.

Yet, the mission faces hurdles. Critics argue that human fraternity, while noble, struggles to address systemic issues like economic disparities or geopolitical tensions. Al-Ghaith counters this with enthusiasm, advocating for incremental steps—education, youth engagement, and responsible media—to amplify shared values. His prior work on technology’s role in unity, emphasized in Malaysia, found echoes in Jakarta, where he urged leveraging digital platforms to bridge divides.

Jakarta as a Catalyst for Change

The Jakarta conference will be a defining moment, not only for Al-Ghaith but also for the global human fraternity movement. Hosted by UIII, the event will be attended by scholars, activists, and policymakers to discuss four critical themes: Building Fraternity Across Borders, Rights and Social Justice, Media’s Role in Bridging Divides, and Climate Change, Global Crises, and Environmental Justice. Al-Ghaith’s leadership will be greatly anticipated in panel discussions, where he will connect global challenges to local solutions, citing Indonesia’s history of pluralism as a model.

Saiful Umam, PhD, UIII’s Director of Research and Partnerships, praised Ambassador Al-Ghaith’s vision: “His leadership shows us that human fraternity is not an abstract dream but a call to action rooted in collaboration.” The launch of the Indonesian Institute of Human Fraternity will also be a highlight, positioning Indonesia as a center for dialogue in a region grappling with diversity and modernization.

For a world weary of division, this message is a spark of hope. For Indonesia, it will be a reminder of its potential to lead. And for Dr. Khaled Al-Ghaith, it is another step in a lifelong journey to prove that humanity’s greatest strength lies in its shared heart. []
