IMEI Registration

If you’re a new international student arriving in Indonesia, one of the first things you must do is register your phone’s IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). Without this step, you won’t be able to use a local SIM card or access mobile networks while in the country.

Your Length of Stay Matters
1. Short Stay (90 Days or Less)
If you’re staying in Indonesia for 90 days or less:
No tax will be charged.
You can register your phone at official mobile operator outlets like Telkomsel, XL, or Indosat.
Bring your passport and phone with you. The registration will be valid for 3 months and can be extended once (free of charge). Some phone shops even offer free IMEI registration when you purchase a SIM card or internet package.
2. Long Stay (More Than 90 Days

  • If you’re staying for more than 90 days (such as for study at UIII)
  • You should register your IMEI immediately after arriving, ideally at Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Terminal 3) or at an official customs service center
  • If your phone is worth less than USD 500, no tax applies.
  • For phones over USD 500, you’ll only be taxed on the amount exceeding $500:
  • Without a KITAS (temporary stay permit) and NPWP (tax number): 40%
  • With KITAS + NPWP: 30%. Example: If your phone is worth $800 → 40% × ($800–$500) = $120 tax

    Important Reminder
  • IMEI registration must be completed within 90 days of your arrival
  • Registration at Soekarno-Hatta Airport is free
  • If you delay registration and need to do it later (e.g., at a customs office in Jakarta), you may be required to pay a tax—even for phones under $500.
How to Register Before You Fly
To make the process easier, you can pre-register online before arriving: Visit: https://
    www.beacukai.go.id/register-imei.html
  • Fill out the form with the following details
  • Your flight number (e.g., QR 444)
  • Full name (as written in your passport)
  • Passport number
  • Arrival date, nationality, and email address
  • Phone information: brand, model, RAM, storage, color, IMEI 1 & 2 (dial *#06#), and estimated price in USD

After submitting the form, you’ll receive a QR code by email. Save this code and have it ready when you land.
Register Upon Arrival at Soekarno-Hatta Airport (Terminal 3)
  • Head to the Customs Office near Check-in Counter A in the Departure area
  • Show them your QR code and passport
  • Explain that you’re a student coming to study at UIII
  • Your phone will be verified and registered. If it’s under $500, the process is completely free.

Internet Access for Students in Indonesia

For international students arriving in Indonesia, securing reliable internet access is essential for academic success and daily life. Here are some practical options to stay connected during your studies:
    Prepaid SIM Cards
Upon arrival at major Indonesian airports like Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, you can purchase prepaid SIM cards from leading providers such as Telkomsel, Indosat Ooredoo, and XL Axiata. These SIM cards offer various data packages tailored to different durations and usage needs. To acquire one, present your passport for registration. Purchasing a SIM card at the airport is convenient, though prices may be slightly higher than in city outlets.
    eSIM Services
If your smartphone supports eSIM technology, consider activating an eSIM plan. International providers like Airalo and Holafly offer eSIM services compatible with Indonesian networks, allowing you to set up a data plan without needing a physical SIM card. Ensure your device is unlocked and eSIM-compatible before opting for this service.
    Free Public Wi-Fi
In urban centers such as Jakarta and Bali, numerous public places—including cafes, restaurants, libraries, and shopping malls—offer free Wi-Fi access. The Jakarta provincial government provides “JakWifi,” a free Wi-Fi service available in various public areas. To locate these hotspots, use the JAKI app, which offers an interactive map of JakWifi locations.
