For some, there has been lingering doubt about whether Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) is exclusively for Muslims. In reality, UIII is home to faculty and students from diverse countries, faiths, and backgrounds. Since its inception in 2021, the university has embraced a spirit of tolerance and inclusivity. Here is a simple yet meaningful story that reflects this commitment.
One faculty that actively practices Islam Wasathiyyah, the principle of moderation and harmony, is the Faculty of Social Sciences (FoSS). As Christmas 2025 and the New Year 2026 approached, FoSS organized its annual BBQ gathering. This event serves as a bonding opportunity between students and lecturers and, on this occasion, included the tradition of giving Christmas gifts to FoSS lecturers and several students. FoSS also routinely shares holiday packages with staff members who celebrate Christmas every year.
The potluck-style event featured dishes prepared by students representing various countries, including Afghanistan, Egypt, and Pakistan. FoSS provided the main menu, which typically includes biryani rice, chicken satay, meatballs, and an assortment of snacks and treats.
The program began with a lively opening by FoSS Dean, Dr. Philips J. Vermonte, who brought humor to the stage before inviting UIII Rector, Prof. Jamhari Ma’ruf, to deliver his remarks. In his speech, the Rector emphasized the importance of academic dedication and encouraged students to introduce UIII to their home countries. Following the address, Prof. Jamhari presented a Christmas gift to Dr. Samuel Blanch, a FoSS lecturer from Australia. Later, Dr. Philips invited Ridwan al-Makassary, Director of COMPOSE, to distribute gifts to a group of Christian students within FoSS. COMPOSE was chosen as a representative center that frequently organizes interfaith dialogues and promotes tolerance.
After the gift-giving ceremony, participants enjoyed a meal together in a warm and informal setting. Events like these provide a space for dialogue and cultural exchange, fostering friendships and mutual understanding. May this Christmas and the New Year 2026 bring peace and happiness to UIII and Indonesia.
Happy New Year 2026!
