Prof. Dr. M. Amin Abdullah

Prof. Dr. M. Amin Abdullah (born in Pati, Central Java, July 28, 1953; age 65 is a philosopher, scientist, hermeneuticist and Indonesian Muslim scholar. He served as Chancellor of the State Islamic University of Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta for two periods (2005-2010) and was also active in the Muhammadiyah organization with the highest position as Deputy Chairperson of the Muhammadiyah Central Leadership (2000-2005). Prof. Amin currently serves as Chair of the Commission for the Culture of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences.


He completed Kulliyat Al-Mu'allimin Al-Islamiyyah (KMI), Gontor Ponorogo Islamic Boarding School in 1972 and Bachelor Program (Bakalaureat) at the 1977 Institute of Education (IPD) in the same boarding school. He then completed the Undergraduate Program at the Ushuluddin Faculty, Comparative Religion Department, Sunan Kalijaga IAIN Yogyakarta, in 1982. With the sponsorship of the Ministry of Religion and the Government of the Republic of Turkey, starting in 1985 he took the Ph.D. in the field of Islamic Philosophy, in the Department of Philosophy, Faculty of Art and Sciences, Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey (1990). He also attended the Post-Doctoral Program at McGill University, Canada (1997-1998).
