Depok, June 11, 2026 — Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) has achieved an important milestone in its journey toward becoming a sustainable and environmentally responsible campus by receiving a Climate Action Certificate recognizing its contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Issued by ZonaEBT on June 11, 2026, the certificate verifies that UIII has funded verified climate action resulting in the reduction or removal of one metric ton of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions. The contribution supports the operation of the New Gas-Fired Power Plant (PLTGU) Priok Block 4, a project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through cleaner energy generation.
The certification was awarded following an academic visit conducted by students and faculty members of UIII’s Master of Finance in Sustainable Finance (MFin.SF) program to the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX). The visit focused on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles and Impact Investment, highlighting the growing importance of sustainability considerations within financial systems and investment decision-making.
For UIII, the achievement represents an important step toward realizing its long-term aspiration of becoming a Green Campus that integrates sustainability into its academic, operational, and institutional culture.
According to Prof. Maila D.H. Rahiem, PhD, consultant for UIII’s Green Campus Initiative, climate responsibility must become an integral part of higher education institutions in the twenty-first century.
“Universities have a unique responsibility to shape future leaders who are not only intellectually capable but also environmentally conscious. This certification may represent a modest contribution in quantitative terms, but its significance lies in cultivating a culture of sustainability within the university community. Every meaningful transformation begins with a first step, and UIII is committed to ensuring that sustainability becomes part of our institutional identity,” she said.
The initiative also reflects UIII’s commitment to embedding sustainability within its quality assurance and institutional development frameworks.
Dr. Alpha Amirrachman, Head of UIII’s Quality Assurance Center, emphasized that sustainability is increasingly becoming a key indicator of excellence in higher education worldwide.
“For UIII, sustainability is not merely an environmental agenda; it is part of our commitment to institutional quality and continuous improvement. Green Campus principles must be reflected in how we teach, conduct research, manage resources, and engage with society. This certification demonstrates that environmental responsibility can be integrated into our quality culture and strategic development as a university,” he said.
As a young and internationally oriented institution, UIII continues to strengthen its Green Campus agenda through initiatives that promote environmental stewardship, sustainable governance, and climate-conscious engagement. The Climate Action Certificate marks an encouraging step toward a broader institutional commitment to sustainability and aligns with UIII’s vision of contributing to global solutions through education, research, and international collaboration.
Looking ahead, UIII aims to expand sustainability initiatives across campus operations, academic programs, research activities, and community engagement efforts. Through these initiatives, the university seeks to position itself as a leading center for learning and innovation that not only studies sustainability but also actively practices it.
The academic visit and related sustainability initiatives were facilitated by Dr. Istiana Maftuchah of UIII’s Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), who teaches courses in Sustainable Finance. Holding a doctoral degree in Sustainable Development Management from Trisakti University’s joint program with Colorado State University, United States, and currently serving as a Secondee and Indonesia Country Representative to the OECD Environment Directorate, Dr. Maftuchah has actively promoted the integration of sustainability, ESG principles, and climate action into the university’s academic programs.[]
