DEPOK – The Faculty of Science and Technology at Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) hosted its latest “Talk with Data” session on Friday, May 25, 2026. This edition featured Dr. Arie Wahyu Wijayanto, a prominent expert from Politeknik Statistika STIS, as the speaker.
Centered on the theme Applied Research on Satellite Data, he broke down how open-access satellite images can be supercharged with Artificial Intelligence (AI), transforming raw, public data into invaluable tools for solving real-world societal problems.

He pointed out that this satellite-based approach is far more efficient than conventional field surveys, which often take years to complete and incur massive costs. By leveraging this technology, critical data regarding land conditions, urban density, and regional poverty levels can now be acquired with unprecedented speed and accuracy.

The impact of this work hasn’t gone unnoticed on the global stage. In fact, the research developed by Dr. Arie and his team has secured major international recognition. Politeknik Statistika STIS took home the 2023 GEO SDG Award for its groundbreaking poverty mapping project, followed by BPS winning a similar award in 2025 for driving innovation in agricultural statistics.
The atmosphere was welcoming and highly interactive. The students and faculty members showed great enthusiasm as they raised various questions and shared their thoughts during the session.

This “Talk with Data” event is part of FST’s commitment to creating a space for cross-institutional scientific dialogue, connecting the campus academic community with active researchers and practitioners.
