Depok, Indonesia – On August 8, 2025, Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) hosted Ms. Ekaterina Zagladina, President of the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, for a dialogue with the university’s academic community on fostering global peace education and strategic partnerships.
During her visit, Ms. Zagladina met with key UIII figures, including Rifqi Muna, PhD, Head of the Academic Senate; Dr. Phil. Syafiq Hasyim, Vice Rector for Academics; Prof. Amsal Bakhtiar, Vice Rector for Finance and Business Development; Saiful Umam, PhD, Director for Research and Strategic Cooperation; Luthfi Hamidi, PhD, Head of MA in Economics program; and Assoc. Prof. Djayadi Hanan, Head of the PhD in Political Science program, as well as UIII students from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.
Ms. Zagladina introduced the work of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, an institution established in 1999 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mikhail Gorbachev to bring together laureates, global leaders, and academic communities in addressing pressing world issues. While originally conceived as an intellectual and philosophical platform, the Summit has evolved into a global network of over 100 universities, offering educational programs, leadership training, and thematic modules on topics such as children’s rights, ethics, and conflict resolution.
In her remarks, Ms. Zagladina emphasized the importance of peace education that transcends purely theoretical discussions, integrating spiritual values into social life in ways that reflect diverse cultural, historical, and geopolitical realities. “We seek to build something truly universal,” she noted, “that can be adapted and embraced by communities around the world, not only through formal teaching but also by creating real-life opportunities for young people to engage in peacebuilding.”
The discussion explored potential collaborations between UIII and the Summit’s global network, including joint research, academic exchanges, and the integration of Nobel Peace Laureates’ educational modules into UIII programs. Ms. Zagladina also highlighted the Summit’s initiatives such as webinars, discussion forums, and student projects that generate social impact.
UIII’s leadership expressed enthusiasm for future cooperation, noting the alignment between the university’s mission and the Summit’s vision of fostering dialogue, ethical leadership, and cross-cultural understanding.
The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to explore concrete steps toward partnership, paving the way for UIII students and faculty to participate in the Summit’s global initiatives and contribute to international peacebuilding efforts.
