Depok, May 6, 2025 – In a significant step toward advancing academic excellence, 20 faculty members of the Universitas Islam Internasional Indonesia (UIII) signed contracts for the 2025 Research Grant Program on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The signing ceremony, held in the Meeting Room on the 4th floor of the Rectorate Building at UIII’s Depok campus, was presided over by UIII Rector, Prof. Dr. Jamhari.

The Research Grant Program, a cornerstone of UIII’s mission to foster cutting-edge scholarship, underscores the university’s dedication to supporting its faculty in producing high-impact research and publications. This year’s grants reflect UIII’s strategic efforts to empower its academics to address pressing global and regional challenges through rigorous inquiry and innovation.

A Commitment to Research Excellence

Director for Research and Strategic Cooperation at UIII, Saiful Umam, Ph.D., emphasized the transformative potential of the program. “This funding initiative is designed to inspire our faculty to be more productive in conducting research and disseminating their findings through high-quality publications,” he said. “It is a testament to UIII’s commitment to nurturing a vibrant research ecosystem that contributes meaningfully to both national and international academic discourses.”

The 2025 grants cover a diverse range of disciplines, including Islamic studies, social sciences, education, and economics, aligning with UIII’s interdisciplinary approach to tackling contemporary issues. The funded projects are expected to produce peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and policy papers, further elevating UIII’s reputation as a hub for scholarly excellence.

As Prof. Jamhari remarked during the ceremony, “Our faculty are at the heart of UIII’s mission to create a better future through knowledge and innovation. These grants empower them to push boundaries and make a lasting impact.”

Strategic Investments Amid Challenges

UIII’s ability to sustain its research funding program is particularly noteworthy given the financial constraints faced by many academic institutions. “While some universities have experienced budget cuts due to efficiency measures, UIII has taken proactive steps to ensure the continuity of our research initiatives,” Dr. Umam noted. These steps include forging partnerships with national and international funding bodies, streamlining internal processes, and prioritizing research with high societal impact.

Each year, UIII faculty secure funding from a variety of sources, including domestic programs and prestigious international schemes. This consistent success reflects the university’s rigorous selection processes and the caliber of its academic staff, many of whom are globally recognized scholars in their fields.

a sharp critique of the appropriation of Islamic knowledge in Western academia. She argued for the use of decolonial heuristics—not mere diversity—to transform the field. Her insights on how colonial categories shape “religion” in academic study were particularly resonant for scholars navigating hybrid epistemologies.

Prof. Joseph E.B. Lumbard from College of Islamic Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar, presented ‘Towards Islamic Decolonialism’. He critiqued the secular-liberal underpinnings of current decolonial theories, proposing instead an Islamic approach grounded in divine truth and moral objectivity. His talk highlighted how Islamic ethical frameworks could provide substantive alternatives to liberal relativism in discourses on justice, governance, and human dignity.

Amplifying Impact Through Publications

A key objective of the Research Grant Program is to amplify the visibility of UIII’s research through publications in high-impact journals and other scholarly platforms. By incentivizing faculty to publish in reputable outlets, UIII aims to contribute to global knowledge production while addressing issues relevant to Indonesia and the broader Muslim world.

The university has also implemented strategic measures to support faculty in navigating the complex landscape of academic publishing. These include workshops on manuscript preparation, peer-review processes, and open-access publishing, as well as collaborations with leading publishers to showcase UIII’s research output.

Research for the Future

The signing of the 2025 research grant contracts marks another milestone in UIII’s journey to become a leading global center for Islamic scholarship and interdisciplinary research. By investing in its faculty, UIII is not only advancing academic knowledge but also fostering solutions to real-world challenges, from sustainable development to interfaith dialogue.

With the 2025 Research Grant Program now underway, UIII is poised to further solidify its position as a beacon of intellectual rigor and societal transformation. The university’s unwavering commitment to research and publication ensures that its faculty will continue to shape conversations and policies on a global stage.
